Barby Asante’s work creates situations and spaces for dialogue, collective thinking, ritual and re-enactment. For this project at BALTIC, the artist proposes a performative forum, drawing its inspiration from conferences and sessions that negotiate treaties and create policy. Through this Asante debates and discusses the personal, social, political and cultural implications of legislation.
Asante will be inviting women/non-binary people of colour to jointly create a live writing of a new Declaration of Independence exploring these themes as part of an ongoing project Always a Painful Declaration of Independence - For Ama. For Aba. for Charlotte and Adjoa. This new commission will further manifest both as a physical environment within an exhibition and as a live performance during Art50 Festival weekend at BALTIC in February 2019.
