Violin and Voice is an interactive workshop inspired by Susan Philipsz new work A Single Voice 2017, currently showing in BALTIC’s Level 4 gallery. This focused evening workshop will be led by Professor Griselda Pollock and Dr. Sam Belinfante (Centre for Audio Visual Experimentation, University of Leeds) along with violinist Sophie Appleton, (Royal Northern Sinfonia) will examine the use of violin and voice as carriers of information and history. There will be a demonstration by Sophie Appleton, and a talk exploring sound as a sculptural presence as used by artists and musicians. This workshop will explore the dynamics of Susan Philipsz’ precise deployment of sound in a given space. This interactive event will address ways that historical memory and meditation on themes of distance, separation and isolation is developed in Philipsz’ installations and exhibitions.

This event is developed in partnership with Centre for Audio Visual Experimentation (CAVE), School of Fine Art, History of Art and Cultural Studies, University of Leeds.
